Happiness in the Air

A Life in the Air is an absolute must for any balloonist or balloon aficionado or common reader like me who just wants to read an inspiring story about a person who follows his dream and makes a life for himself based on what makes him happy. Bruce Comstock's book brought me closer than I'd ever been to experiencing the joy of ballooning and the excitement of competitive flying among an international group of very collegial and eclectic people. The story has a modest beginning: grad student meets balloon, falls in love with ballooning. From there on evolves a whole lifetime of flying, teaching, competing, manufacturing, writing, inventing, and fame as a world champion balloonist, and all the adventures therein.

Smile your way thru this wonderful book!

What an excellent listen for all of us armchair adventurers! Comstock details his fascination, exhilaration, delight, growth and total life involvement in ballooning.
Yes, it is also a history of the avocation of ballooning since the 1970's and the tremendous growth in interest in it. Also detailed is the evolution of competitive racing via balloon.
It is written in a very comprehensible and fun manner, warts and all as it were.
As well as it is written, the narrator does add immeasurably to the enjoyment of the writer's craft, as his voice is clear and easy to listen to, but mostly because his voice reflects the writer's joy in ballooning.
This book was gifted to me in exchange for an impartial review.

This is a wonderful memoir of a determined, challenge-seeking, world-class adventurer-yet-everyman. Balloonists in particular will enjoy the first-hand look into the development of hot air ballooning in the 1970's and beyond, and the many contributions Bruce has made to the sport since then. Casual readers will take away unique insight into what drives a person to set seemingly-unattainable goals, and what keeps a person on track to accomplish what they've started out to do. It's a great read, and one I could not set down from start to finish. Highly recommended!
