About the Author
Sik Pak, Grandmaster Ho, 8th Degree Black Belt, began his study of Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan at the age of 10 in Yong Mun, a small town in Kyung Ki province of South Korea. He was awarded Cho Dan at the age of 13 and continued his study there until 1977. From 1977 to 1979, Grand Master Pak served in the Korean Army and taught combat and self-defense skills to his fellow servicemen. He was employed as an instructor of Tang Soo Do at the American Air Force Base in South Korea where he taught the same techniques to U.S. Military Personnel until 1982. In 1981 he won the prestigious korean body-building contest. In 1982, he was chosen as a member of the Korean Olympic Tang Soo Do team and traveled to the International Tang Soo Do Championship in Atlantic City, New Jersey, contributing to the team's victory. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he has been featured in many martial arts motion pictures, such as Best of the Best. Most recently, he starred in the featured-length film, Hunt to Kill. He has released a full line of Instructional Videos in traditional Tang Soo Do and other training techniques and has published the bestselling book Complete Tang Soo Do Manual, Volume 1 and Self-Defense for Kids.

Very Good Book - A must have for any practicing martial artist.

I have been in martial arts for many years. Finding a user friendly comprehensive volumn that literally takes you from a-z through forms, some applicable self-defense moves as they relate to those forms and still leads you the next level is a treasure to be discovered. What impressed me is the diagramming. It may have helped that I conceptualize the way the author does and his communication style matches my own. I do not have any negatives other than I wish it had the basic motions for Tang Soo Do covered in it. I had been doing my own hard copy diagramming because the school I was taught in had a great Teacher, Master J. D. Lawler. We did not use manuals. He could show us something new everyday and we could never grasp it all. He was that amazing. This book helped shed light on some of the teaching I received from Master Lawler. I hope the Black Belt Vol 2 is just as good.

Interesting and Informational!

This book is an excellent companion for someone taking Tang Soo Do or Soo Bahk Do who would like some additional information from someone knowledgable. It is a somewhat less useful resource for someone who knows nothing: although the book touts itself as containing curriculum from white belt to black belt (which it does!), it would not be ideal to use the book this way (to be fair, I don't think there IS a book one ought to attempt to learn from white to black belt with alone). Many of the photos are unfortunately far away or unclear in positioning/detail, thus rendering certain explanations less useful.

Nonetheless, I learned some interesting history and vocabulary from this book. If you are taking American Tang Soo Do (e.g., through a Chuck Norris system or one that was or is affiliated with him or his peers), much of this book will seem slightly off-kilter to you, as it is a representative of truly traditional (Korean) Tang Soo Do.

If you are early in your training, it might be helpful in aspects - it is certainly complete for what it is, containing stretching fundamentals, plyometric exercises, and everything from forms to self-defense and one-step sparring combinations. It was fun to flip through for me (I have been training in TSD for over 20 years, and am an instructor and a black belt), but I doubt that I will use it regularly to inform my training myself - not that this is why I purchased it. I just like looking at stuff that pertains to my art!

Great Book on Tang So Do

I have been taking one form or other of Martial Arts most of my life. This book is a great resource for any Tang So Do student. Although many of the techniques are not practiced in my dojang, or the patterns are slightly different, I found this book to be interesting and informative. Your not going to finnish reading this book and be able to defend yourself but with a membership to a dojang and daily practice this book will definately help you understand why you practice the forms and basic movements.

About the Author
Bob Gardner is a long-admired member of the aviation community. He began his flying career as a hobby in Alaska in 1960 while in the U.S. Coast Guard. By 1966, Bob earned his Private land and sea, Commercial, Instrument, Instructor, CFII, and MEL. Over the next 16 years he was an instructor, charter pilot, corporate and freight Captain, and Director of ASA Ground Schools.

Currently, Bob holds an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with single and multi-engine land ratings; a CFI certificate with instrument and multi-engine land ratings; and a Ground Instructor's Certificate with advanced and instrument ratings. In addition, Bob is a Gold Seal Instructor and has been instructing since 1968. To top off this impressive list of accomplishments, Bob is also a well-known author, journalist, and airshow lecturer.

This is a great book. It's full of information on flight communications. Basic and professionally, it covers it all. Love how it's easy to read and easier to understand. Nothing beats the real thing, but this really gets you ready for that. A must buy for the student pilot.

Good essential book

This book covers most communication scenarios between ATC and Private pilots. It gives useful examples for common dialogs and helps pilots expect ATC responses. I think overall a good read with positive results on radio communication skills and confidence. This book also covers IFR dialogs during approaches.

This is an excellent resource for student pilots like myself that are not necessarily having trouble knowing what to say to ATC, rather, what kind of reply to expect from ATC.

Even if you are nearing the end of pilot training, buy this book, read the chapters covering the class of airspace that you most frequently fly in, and reap the benefits of feeling more comfortable on the radio.

The radio is a world of its own, and is a big one too. You can't study about it enough.

And it has chapters on topics which may not be as important -- tiling floors, solving number puzzles, making polyhedra out of marshmallows and toothpicks -- but that make the book more fun and develop higher-level reasoning skills.
Hard Math can be used in many different ways. Some parents will enjoy reading it together with their child. A teacher can give the book to an exceptional student who could read through it on her own whenever she's done early with the regular math lesson. Or a teacher could treat the book as a set of lesson plans for his or her top math group: each section of the book can serve as a set of lecture notes and the students could then work separately or together on the corresponding workbook page. Hard Math can similarly be a blueprint for an after school math club.
Hard Math is designed to be accessible to very advanced 3rd graders. But Hard Math is very hard. Most parents will find that there's a lot in it that they don't know and most advanced kids will be better off waiting until at least 4th grade to try it.

An excellent math enrichment book - highly recommended

I was lucky to have access to this book in manuscript form, and I used this book as basis of discussion for an after-school "Challenge Math" class at a local public elementary school. We had kids from grades 3 - 5.

I can not go far enough in complimenting the book. It introduces very challenging and interesting material in a fun way. What I like about the textbook is that it really expands the kids' understanding of what one can do with math. (It is not uncommon for kids to say "Wow" once they understood an especially cool concept). For example, one of my favorite chapters in the book is on "base 8" or how the number system would look like if we counted by eights instead of tens. The book refers to this as Bart Simpsons' world since the Simpson characters have four fingers only. This material is usually not covered in school curriculum. Introducing this to relatively young kids fulfills many functions: 1) it is pretty cool in a mind-blowing sort of way, 2) it forces kids to be flexible in their thinking, and 3) it makes them realize that math requires deep thinking and not just memorization. The fact that the author is able to explain this sort of material to young kids is amazing, but it really does work.

The textbook also comes with a workbook - Hard Math for Elementary School: Workbook - which has a bunch of challenging and fun problems. The problems are leveled -- the first few are relatively easy to do if the student understood the basic concept, but the problems get very challenging in the end. I would highly recommend the workbook. What I typically did was explain a small section of a chapter and then had the students do a worksheet.

I am so excited that this book is finally out! I have been recommending it to all my friends who have young children. It is really a very unique and wonderful book, which hopefully will lead to a lifetime of math enjoyment for kids. As a testament to this, I have to add that I learned a lot from reading the book as well, which I am sure will be the case for many parents and teachers as well.

My husband and I are professionals (engineer and attorney) and did not feel like our daughter was being challenged enough in math at school. She was tested for gifted, however, the teachers were still not supplementing her enough. She is currently in 3rd grade. We bought this series to work at home in addition to school work and it is EXCELLENT. She is very proud to show her friends her "Hard Math". Parents and teachers who have seen the textbook think it is too "hard", but that is exactly why we like it. We only spend 1 to 2 hours a week on the book and we are going at a nice pace. Highly recommend it if you want something more to work on with your kids.

Excellent book (minor tip that some parents might find helpful)

I bought this book for a second to third grader who wasn't being challenged enough by math at school. This book is excellent and covers topics that wouldn't be covered at school (either ever or until much later). I actually like the title, because it just challenges the kids and gives them real joy when they're able to figure it out while not disappointing them if they're not able to.

That has all been said by other reviewers but the reason why I felt compelled to write a review was my experience with the chapter on "base 8" arithmetic. I have some background in computer science and am very familiar with a binary system (base 2). I (and possibly the kid as well) absolutely loved the chapter - both from a mathematical as well as a sociological perspective (different people can talk and think differently based on their unique cultural experiences). However, there was one unintended consequence. The chapter uses Simpsons as an example of a society that might use a base 8. At which I felt obligated (encouraged by endless stream of "pleases") to introduce my kid to the Simpsons show. Not a wise parenting decision :-). I hadn't watched much of the show myself and even shows I watched before feel very different to me now as a parent. Simpsons is not an appropriate show for an 8 year old (or even a 10 year old for that matter). So, if you are in a similar situation I would recommend you to skip that chapter until the end of the book. Even from a complexity of concept perspective, I think it belongs much later in the book.

Having said that I must say that I truly am grateful for Glenn Ellison to have taken the time to put this book together. Chances are that any money he's making from this book is not commensurate with the value of his time. However, Glenn you do have a bunch of indebted parents.

Historical Apologetics

This is an excellent resource by Josh McDowell that deals with the historical evidences for Christianity. McDowell covers evidence for the Old and New Testaments, archaeology, historical evidence for Jesus Christ (outside of the Bible), as well as many great quotations from both Christian and secular authorities. McDowell does a fine job of arranging the content in a clear and coherent manner. The material is arranged in a point by point format, and there is also several charts. I think this will be a valuable resource for your library. Highly recommended.

Evidence for Christianity

This work (compendium, really) was not intended to be read straight through. It was intended to bring together the basics of the evidence for the Christian faith. All of the historical evidence cannot be contained in one book, and the author does not try. He instead lays out a logical outline that helps the reader find what he's looking for, and gives easily-understood information and excellent citations of the top scholars, secular and Christian, in that particular area.

Although there is enough material for a lifetime of discussion and argument in this book, the reader is warned by McDowell that the evidence he has pulled together is not the primary focus. That focus should not be on winning arguments by throwing out evidence, but on the valid questions people bring to the table in their spiritual journey, and how the evidence can help address those questions. For the seeker, then, this book represents a treasure trove of sources to investigate on one's own or with a friend.

For the Christian layman, if approached as intended, this book will be a wonderful resource for answering specific questions concerning historical evidences for the Bible and Christianity. It is not intended to teach one how to debate non-Christians. It will be very helpful, though, in addressing the distressing lack of historical knowledge about Christianity so prevalent in our churches and society at large today.

I find this book continually open on my desk as I prepare papers, lessons for Sunday School, or Bible study. The beauty of this book is that I don't have to read several pages in order to jump into the author's stream of thought. This book should be on every pastor's and lay leader's bookshelf.

This book should be a basic part of everyone's personal library.

So many times we hear about skeptics of Christianity and/or the Christian rant and rave on YouTube-like sites and various discussion boards. Some skeptics have already made their mind up because they were hurt by someone in the past. Therefore arguing is therapeutic for such people. However if you are a person who desires honest answers and technical/detailed evidence, which goes beyond the noise of semantic bantering and false analogies typical of many "so-called" free thinkers, you will love this book. This book should be a basic part of everyone's personal library. So much powerful evidence to make even the most outspoken skeptics of Christianity into some of its most ardent defenders and become devoted followers of Christ. The exhaustive amount of archeological finds, historical accounts, and ancient cultural evidence presented by this book debunks a myriad of objections proliferated by the academic elites within our secular universities by presenting just raw evidence and facts. While bible skeptics invent allegations and devise speculations that were never supported by the archaeological evidence, this book methodically supplies real evidence and hard data that would hold up in a court room. If you once considered yourself a Christian but now have labeled yourself an atheist or agnostic because you thought Christianity was just a bunch of "made-up stories" and is not supported by any real evidence, you will be pleasantly surprised that it is those supporting facts and hard evidence presented by "Evidences for Christianity" that set Christianity apart from every world religion and the religion of atheism.

Those who claimed see the risen Christ and His ascension would not put their lives on the line if they actually knew it was not true. Those who analyze the vast amount of prophetical fulfillment wrought by Christ, and acknowledge the fact that He violated Hebrew culture and expectations of what their messiah should do by NOT SEEKING to conquer the Roman Empire, will find it difficult to convince even themselves that these JEWISH converts would have just "made up" the story about Jesus when even those who persecuted Christians not only verified Jesus' existence but even confirmed what those early Christians believed about Him and the sufferings they faced for those beliefs.

About the Author

Edward Keller is a professor, researcher, writer, and most importantly, mentor and teacher to undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, Dr. Keller's students are working on earthquake hazards, how waves of sediment move through a river system following disturbance, and geologic controld on habitat to endangered southern steelhead trout. He was born and raised in California (Bachelor�€™s degree in Geology and Mathematics from California State University at Fresno, Master�€™s degree in Geology from University of California at Davis), it was while pursuing his Ph.D. in Geology from Purdue University in 1973 that Ed wrote the first edition of Environmental Geology, the text that became the foundation of the environmental geology curriculum. Ed joined the faculty of the University of California Santa Barbara in 1976 and has been there since, serving multiple times as the chair of both the Environmental Studies and Hydrologic Science programs. In that time he has been the author on over 100 articles, including seminal works on fluvial processes and tectonic geomorphology. Ed�€™s academic honors include the Don J. Easterbrook Distinguished Scientist Award, Geological Society of America (2004), Quatercentenary Fellowship from Cambridge University, England (2000), two Outstanding Alumnus Awards from Purdue University (1994, 1996), A Distinguished Alumnus Award from California State University at Fresno (1998), the Outstanding Outreach Award from Southern California Earthquake Center (1999).

Duane DeVecchio is currently a researcher and adjunct professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he earned his PhD in geology. Since starting his graduate education, Duane has devoted a significant amount of time to becoming an effective communicator of science to today�€™s students. He is a passionate teacher and feels strongly that students need to develop the ability to critically evaluate data presented in numerous forms from various sources. He believes this is particularly important in today�€™s world where the internet offers accessibility to vast amounts of information, yet the validity of this information is often questionable or misleading. Fundamental to teaching this skill is integrating data from his current and past research to illustrate to students the methodology and rigor of scientific investigations.

Duane has a broad field-based background in the Earth sciences and likes to tell stories about his many months of living in trailers in the middle of nowhere mapping rocks. For his Masters Degree and post-Masters research he conducted structural and stratigraphic analysis, as well as numerical dating of volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks in southeast Idaho and the central Mojave Desert of California, which record the Miocene depositional and extensional histories of these regions. His PhD research was aimed at resolving fault slip rates and quantifying the earthquake hazard presented by several active fault-related folds growing beneath urbanized southern California. Duane�€™s current research interests focus on the timing and rates of change of Earth�€™s surface due to depositional and erosional processes that result from climate change and tectonics. When Duane is not teaching or conducting research, he enjoys whitewater rafting, rock climbing, snowboarding, and camping with his partner, Christy.
