This is my least favorite re-cert course necessary for my job. I liked the new format in the book and found the key point page tabs and algorithym card very helpful. I will say the lecture and hands-on megacode course through NCTI helped bring everything all together and recommend them if they have courses in your state.

Book could have better organized algorithms. Airway management details could also be better. However, everything else is as expected with these books. Being able to do the pre-test without a CD is great too. Long (and late) range for shipment date, but my book came about a week before anticipated date (about a week to 10 days after ordering), so that was great!

This is less a story line than a series of statements repeating a message that Pablo Escobar was powerful, wealthy or generous. How someone could dull down such a fascinating story to this level is a literary feat of epic proportions.

I tried. I really really tried hard to finish this book, but 50% in I realised the drivel was eternal and had to cut my losses and walk away. It simply never started. I feel robbed for having spent the money.

The best "How to" learning to sail book ever written!

I learned to sail in a 19 foot "Lightning" class sailboat holding this book in my left hand and the tiller in my right hand, while alone in the boat. His homey, unsophisticated descriptions, conveyed the feeling that H. A. Calahan was in the cockpit with me every step of the way. This gave me the confidence to learn the "ropes". In successive chapters he tells you how to buy a boat, how to handle the boat, "17 ways to get into trouble" followed in the next chapter by "17 ways to get out of trouble" with simple easily understood descriptions. There are also many other chapters on subjects essential for safe, trouble-free boating. I subsequently took the basic knowledge acquired from Mr. Calahan and proceeded to successfully sail in many exotic parts of the world and meet and interact with interesting people in the sailing community. Reading this book changed and enriched the lives of my whole family.

Callahan's "Learning to sail" , published first in 1932, is still the best beginner's handbook for the new sailor. This wonderful guide "cuts to the chase", giving the reader the most important information and leaving out the extraneous material that so many more expensive sailing handbooks promote. I learned to sail with this book over fifty five years ago and highly recommend it still. alaskababa

I have been wanting to learn to sail a gaff-rigged sailboat for many years. The boat deals with both gaff and jib-headed sailboat rigs. Although I have sailed small boats for several decades, this book covered subjects I could not find in more modern learn-to-sail books. At first I was somewhat disappointed, but once I started to read in detail, I realized that that "Learning to Sail" had many things I had been looking for and even more subjects I did not expect. There is excellent information about reefing and how to organize your boat to avoid crossing reef lines and damaging your sails. The photographs are not very detailed. You will probably not learn marlinspike seamanship from his photographs, but H. A. Calahan covers many subjects well and in useful detail.

Wow -- know a lot more about the younger days of our Pres now..

I came across this book on the shelf in the 3rd grade classroom of my niece, as i was sitting in on her class one day (by her request), and i read through a good fraction of it as i waited -- and was really touched and moved by the detail. I'll admit i've been a huge fan of the Pres's personal story and arc right from the beginning, but all the details of his family life -- his Mother (the most), his grandparents, his sister, his search for roots through his father -- just blew me away. I have a much better picture of what makes this very amazing man and incredibly inspiring speaker, exactly who he is today, starting right from his birth (I have to say i only got as far as his Columbia days in the book, about 1/3 through, before the class ended and i had to leave it behind! But i'm certain i would've found the rest also quite interesting, though slightly less new to me, as i feel i know his more recent history in somewhat better detail already).

Anyway, for a 'full-grown' adult like me, i rather relished this book, so i can only think it must be quite interesting for a kid also to read through, and compare their life to our current very amazing President's arc (in contradistinction to the much *less* distinguished dissolute youth and adulthood of various previous occupants of the office, and in order to not sully the positivity any further, i won't go into specifics about who and when, and readers can fill in their least favorite President here. ;-> ).

This book was purchased to add to my book shelf for my third grade students. I've had a lot of interest from my students about Barack Obama. This book is very well written and easily understood by third graders although the readability level is probably at the fifth grade level. I'd consider this a book that would be suitable for my above average readers.

Grade 3-6-Two delightful short books by John Reynolds Gardiner have been paired up in this audio set. Stone Fox (HarperCollins, 1980) tells the story of a boy determined to win a dog sled race to save his grandfather's farm. No one has ever beaten Stone Fox, an imposing and silent Native American, but little Willy trains daily for the race with his beloved dog, Searchlight. It seems like Willy might even win the race until heartbreaking tragedy strikes. Top Secret (Little, 1984) also features a determined boy and his grandfather, but in a much different setting and story. Allen Brewster has a fantastic idea that might even win the silver trophy at the science fair human photosynthesis. He has several obstacles to overcome. Allen persists in his mission using the scientific method and finally comes up with a concoction that turns him into a human plant. He turns green, craves sunlight and water instead of food, and sprouts baby roots if he stands in mud too long. Everything changes when Allen is deemed a threat to national security and his project is suddenly top secret. Both books are about 20 years old, so the characters do not represent very diverse backgrounds, but the messages of loyalty and determination are timeless. Tony Award winner B. D. Wong narrates the characters to fit the emotion and suspense of each story. The fact that one sentence was left out of the narration of Stone Fox and a few words were dropped from Top Secret might deter purchase of this audiobook for a read-along program. Each story could be listened to for pleasure or as a springboard for classroom discussion.

Great book.

This was an assigned book for my 4th grader and she loved it. Be warned that the end of the book is extremely sad and my daughter was really upset. I wish now I would have read it ahead of time so I could prepare her for it.

Great book

This was a book I read to my 3rd graders as a read aloud. As I read the last few paragraphs I nearly broke down into tears in front of my students. You could hear a pin drop in my classroom. I had to stop and pause for a few minutes before I could go on. When I finally finished the story a few of my children had tears in their eyes, but they held it together better than I did. What a heartfelt story!! We truly enjoyed it!

My 10-year-old nephew recommended this book to me. It is so authentic and such a well-told story. I bought a class set with my own money for my students because I wanted to share it with them and we cried together as we read it. I love that Gardiner didn't bend over backwards trying to make it politically correct. He depicted the true culture of the time and subtly showed racism without naming it, leading the young readers to their own thoughts.

Good content but terrible construction

I've purchased several of the books by this author and have loved the content. The information contained is documented in not many other places and it is absolutely indispensable in the field of cleaner burner design that is being demanded in this day and age.
However, by its very title this book should be very well constructed and it is not. The other books by this author were signature sewn and bound to last the use a book with this much information in it should get. This book is thermo edge bound with very small margins. I would not expect it to last as a "handbook" should last. The gutter margin being as small as it is will make it next to impossible to even have it rebound in a more lasting fashion. Being this one of the most expensive books by this author I am very disappointed.
