Making a Wise Choice by reading this book

I found this book super helpful, and it helped me make a decision as the book title suggestions. Coding is not for me after all, and reading the author's experiences along with the experiences other alumni, who decided to make a career change and learn skills at a coding bootcamp. This book helped me clarify and examine what my strengths and skills are, and my time and energy would be better spent on walking towards a career that compliments my already existing strengths instead of developing a whole new set of skills.

Tobie Puttock worked for Italian restaurant Caffe e Cucina before honing his skills in restaurant kitchens in Italy, Switzerland, and the UK, including time behind the burners at London's River Cafe and Fifteen London. Tobie then returned home to establish the Australian counterpart, Fifteen Melbourne. Tobie has his own YouTube channel, which is part of Jamie Oliver's Food Tube network. He is the author of Cook Like an Italian, Daily Italian, and Italian Local. Georgia Puttock spent several years working for some of Australia's premier fashion labels and as a freelance makeup artist. She now works as a feline vet nurse. I need this book for my course in Unit Operations and have been using it for about a month now. I think the book would be improved for learning the concepts by giving a little more background information - if often seems like it goes from point A to point C or D without mentioning point B. Also, it's very annoying that it references equation numbers from earlier in the book without reprinting them so that you have to flip back to remember what that equation was.

This book is good for a capstone course where you only need to review material, but it is not great (even borderline useless) for classes that focus on one or two of the sections, such as fluids or mass transfer, as it's likely your class will go into more detail than this book. With that said, you definitely want to purchase this book for use down the road instead of renting it. The international edition is much cheaper however.

In 1732, at the age of 26, Benjamin Franklin first conceived the idea writing a book he wanted to title, The Art of Virtue. The book was to be based a method of self-improvement he had earlier developed and felt had been quite helpful to him. Though Franklin never completed this work, he nurtured the idea for well over fifty years of his life. In 1860, Franklin wrote to a close friend, Lord Kames:

I propose. . . .a little work for the benefit of youth, to be called The Art of Virtue. From the title I think you will hardly conjecture what the nature of the book may be. I must therefore explain it a little. Many people lead bad lives that would gladly lead good lives, but do not know how to make the change. They have frequently resolved and endeavored it; but in vain, because their endeavors have not been properly conducted. . . .

Most people have naturally some virtues, but none have naturally all the virtues. To acquire those that are wanting, and secure what we acquire, as well has what we have naturally, is as properly an art as painting, navigation, or architecture. If a man would become painter, navigator, or architect, it is not enough that he is advised to be one, that he is convinced by the arguments of his advisor that it would be for his advantage to be one, and that he resolves to be one, but he must also be taught the principles of the art, be shown all the methods of working, and how to acquire the habits of using properly all the instruments; and thus regularly and gradually he arrives, by practice, at some perfection in the art. . . .

My Art of Virtue has also its instruments and teaches the manner of using them. . . .

While writing his autobiography in 1785, Franklin commented on The Art of Virtue as follows, . . . .being fully persuaded of the utility and excellence of my method, and that it might be serviceable to people of all religions. . . .I purposed writing a little comment on each virtue, in which I should have shown the advantages of possessing it and the mischief's attending its opposite vice; and I should have called my book, The Art of Virtue.

But it so happened that my intention of writing and publishing this comment was never fulfilled. . . .the necessary close attention to private business in the earlier part of my life, and public business since, have occasioned my postponing it. . . .[and] it has hitherto remained unfinished.

Thanks to Mr. Rogers, The Art of Virtue which Dr. Franklin so long contemplated has now been masterfully completed. Providing marvelous insight into both his methods and his motives for self-improvement, the Art of Virtue is must reading for anyone serious about getting the most out of life.

Looking for a mental challenge? Look no further.

I saw this book one day when I was browsing Franklin Covey planners in the mall. It had been awhile since I read something not business related so I thought I'd give this a shot. I'll be honest when I tell you I enjoy a good read but this book took me about one year to read from beginning to end. The first few chapters weren't too bad but then it got into a section about a debate between two philosophers on the definition of virtue and why one should practice a virtuous life. I've never read anything that mentally straining in my life (my degree is in Mechanical Engineering BTW). I enjoy the arts but that one section took me about a month before I could fully digest what the philosophers were saying in the span of less than 2 pages. This one section proved so enlightening that my head hurt for about 2 days after I had a chance to chew on the content. If you had any doubts that the founding forefathers of this great nation were anything but geniuses, this should dispell any and all myths. I must say that I even had to break out the dictionary for some of the diction used in this book in that it was definitely not your everyday conversational english. If you enjoy mental challenges of a higher level and your mastery of the English language is proficient enough to understand the fine nuances of sentence structure and double, sometimes triple meanings, I would recommend this book. If you're looking for something a little more entertaining and easier on the mind, then definitely look somewhere else. But I will admit, when I did finally complete this book one year later, I actually felt a major sense of accomplishment. I guess that makes me just a little more virtuous?

A primer in basic American values. Insightful, witty, genius

If you ever doubted the basis upon which our great country is built, read the ideals of one of its creators. Benjamin Franklin demonstrates that his contribution to the creation of the United States was purposeful. I am now jealous of the resource that Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Washington, et. al. had when he added to their discourse. The Art of Virtue organizes and describes Franklin's perception of a virtuous life, defines happiness by his own values, and shows how every person has the power to pursue a virtuous life to become a happy person. Those famous inalienable rights which Jefferson quoted in the Declaration of Independence come alive with Franklin's wit and wisdom. It is not often I acknowledge a wise man, but Franklin was no doubt an oracle in the field of character. Most impressively, this wisdom is just as applicable today as it was 200 or 2000 years ago.

About the Author
Amanda Sohan was born in the heart of New York City to a set of parents from British Guyana. While growing up with one foot steeped in the strict cultural boundaries her parents held dear and the other rooted in modern teenage American angst, reading and writing became the main medium for her journey toward freedom. In her dark poetry she grew to love the meaningful depths hidden in a collaboration of words. There was nothing more odd than the music she and her only sister Rowena grew up with; two American, West Indian girls bumping to the sound of Eazy E as Video Music Box flashing across the tube. Her teenage years, a graphic rebellion of words that could sneak under the radar of her parents watchful eye. How ironic that her first work would be a gentle, humorous children's book. But stay turned as she intends to showcase her more adult side in her second book entitled HIM.

Their misery is exceeded only by their vanity!

I am Sicilian. I read "The Leopard" after I watched the film starrring Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale and Alain Delon. Although the film is excellent, Giuseppe Tommasi Di Lampedusa's book surpasses it. The book is not as long as "Gone With the Wind" or "Giant", but it is every bit an epic as both. Perhaps because I am Sicilian and heard some of the types of things about Sicily from my grandfather as are related in the book, it captured my imagination more than it might an Irish-American or an African-American. Lampedusa sets up the historical context of Sicily as a feudal backwater of Spain and quickly disrupts this picture by introducing the historically correct "invasion" of Giuseppe Garibaldi's rag-tag army which landed in Marsala in 1861 and worked its way through Sicily before moving north through the Italian peninsula in unifying Italy as a monarchy to be ruled by Vittorio Emmanuele I.

The aristocracy was caught flat-footed by the unification of Italy. It went from a sleepy decadent life-style to having to contend with a nouveau riche merchant class, which knew nothing of courtly manners. The peasants who made up the vast majority of the population of Sicily, although poor, would never concede to poverty but rather, sought to emulate the aristocrats. Hence the quote "their misery is exceeded only by their vanity." This was true at the time portrayed in "The Leopard" and is true still. This is the genius of Lampedusa's book: he thoroughly understood and was able to accurately relate the psychology of Sicilians.

A remarkable statement of prose

The historic setting is 19th century Sicily, about a prominent family losing its noble grasp on politics and society. Originally published posthumously in Italy in 1958, Giuseppe Lampedusa's novel was adroitly translated to English by Archibald Colquhoun, subsequently in 1960. It offers an interesting view into the Italian civil war and consolidation.
