Karen Keller is a journalist who lived and worked in S�o Paulo, Brazil, for three years. Before moving to Brazil, the California native taught Spanish at a New York City–based foreign language education Web site. Keller is also a published travel guide writer. She currently lives in New Jersey, where she is a local newspaper reporter.

Fantastic as a supplement

I was very excited to see a book for Portuguese in the "Dummies" series, and I was thrilled once I received it. Written in the usual comedic style of this series, "Portuguese for Dummies" is entertaining, very well-organized and has tons of useful information. You should know that this book concentrates only on Brazilian Portuguese.

However, I should say that you shouldn't expect to be able to teach yourself Portuguese solely from this book even though it's fantastic (and the author states this upfront). This book is a great companion to taking Portuguese classes or using another learning resource. Personally, I have been working with the Pimsleur method on CD (which is superb), and so I have a working knowledge of the langugage. This book is great for someone like me, since it can serve as a review, a fun supplement to my regular studies, and has lots of other wonderful features.

I was thrilled to see sections on common Brazilian idiomatic expressions and slang, something that's not contained in most instructional resources I've come across. I have Brazilian friends who constantly confused me with their expressions, so now I'm starting to get it! Also great are sections on terms associated with Brazilian culture, music, Carnaval, helpful things for travelers, tables with conjugations of common verbs, etc. You can tell a lot of thought went into creating this useful guide.

One major problem: the CD is off-the-charts bad. There's an English speaking narrator who introduces conversations and cannot pronounce any of the Portuguese words properly (WHY did they bother having her try?) The Portuguese speakers sound stilted and robotic when talking.

However, the book is fantastic... I strongly recommend that you buy it, then tear the CD off the back cover and play frisbee with your dog.

If you REALLY are serious about learning Portguese, I recommend the following materials, all available on amazon.com:

1. Pimsleur's Brazilian Portguese, Comprehensive CDs (or Cassettes), Levels 1-3.

2. A good Portuguese/English dictionary: I like the Oxford.

3. Portuguese for Dummies

4. Portuguese in 10 Minutes a Day (for vocabulary building).

It is pretty good the language is not as easy as it seems lot of similarity to Spanish except in pronunciation.

Too many mistakes

Learning a language in the informal and fun way proposed by the book is always good, but unfortunately this book has too many mistakes, mostly concerning pronunciation. For example, the letter X in Portuguese does not have only two sounds like they say, but four. The difference between "closed E" and "open E" is never pointed out, so that the letter E in words like "dedo" and "elefante" is said to have the sound of the English E in the word "egg", which is not true. There are also too many accents missing. The list of problems goes on and on. Concerning the CD, I'm totally amazed that the speakers, although from Brazil, still read all the mistakes contained in the book. In their life, they would never say "gostar o Brasil", but "gostar do Brasil". I'm Brazilian and a Portuguese intructor. There is hope for the book because the grammar is not bad, but it needs to be carefully reviewed and corrected.

You just can't beat The Cat in the Hat!!

Theodor Seuss Geisel (AKA Dr.Seuss) wrote and drew MANY classic children's books. The Cat in the Hat was written in 1957 along with The Grinch - both are illustrated by him as well. He once claimed he never wrote stories with a moral but I find that many of his books do have a moral - not sure why he said he didn't.

I remember both books as a youngster as they went way beyond See Dick Run, etc. I have a 'gift' for reading - I was reading Mark Twain in the 3rd grade and was tested at a high school Senior level as a 5th grader. As an 7th grader I tested as a college graduate in reading. The funny thing is I can't spell worth a crap - I finally resorted to just memorizing the words in the early grades as I just could not sound them out. I was once told that I - somehow - learned to read a whole paragraph at a time instead of individual words. As a high school senior I was tested at 1600 to 1800 words a minute (I was told the average person reads more 200 to 300 words a minute at that time).

But I loved Dr. Suess books - I believe all kids love them - my daughter learned to read from us reading the book 2 or 3 times and then expecting her to at least learn to recognize the 1 and 2 letter words (and very quickly she progressed to 3 & 4 letter words - it was quite simply amazing to she her progress!) - she shocked the Kindergarten teacher as she could already read at around the 3rd grade by then. The stories are silly enough that when coupled with the bright colors of the illustrations and a parent helping them along that most kids 'teach' themselves to read without even realizing it.

A BTW - I caught my daughter 'memorizing' both the text in the stories AND her spelling words. I very quickly got her to stop 'learning' to spell that way as I didn't want to suffer the way I have with my horrible spelling. However - the memorizing large amount of text has lead to her being in a movie, some commercials and several plays in college.

I bought 2 copies of this book to give (along with The Grinch) to 2 of my wifes relatives who are expecting in a few months. This quite simply a book that all children will benefit from be exposed to.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ALL CHILDREN - a rare rating of a perfect 10 from me!!!

Seuss' "Cat In the Hat" is a classic for good reason.

Personally, I've never been a fan of Dr. Seuss. His stuff is just too psychedelic and I have a sneaking suspicion that he wrote most of his "best" work while high on shrooms.

Despite this, Seuss' "Cat In the Hat" is a classic for good reason... it connects with most children and seems to engage them in reading.
My own experience with this book with my 4 year old son is nothing short of astonishing. My son is learning to read and this book's melodic and simplified vocabulary keeps him engaged and builds his confidence with each sentence. The pictures are whimsical (kinda disturbing for me), and in a weird way, comforting for children. My kid can now recite most of this book from memory now and feels confident enough to read other sources.

I'm only knocking off a star because the pictures still give me the heebie jeebies, but that's just me.

Actually, I'd forgotten that this one is where the cat makes a huge mess! He does clean it up before the mom gets home but...(hey, that's just me)! So, I'm kind of unsure about the subject matter; maybe I'm being nit-picky. I like the other ones better.

A VERY useful overview

Kwami is concerned to demonstrate the African-ness of Christianity. The opening article looks at the theological insights of Afua Kuma, an illiterate midwife who makes up songs of her experience of Jesus. He sees in her tying Jesus to ordinary human experiences of an ordinary African proof that “Christian faith is not a western religion abut an authentic African experience.” While he is thoroughly evangelical in his insistence on the uniqueness of Christ (and this is part of his criticism of Pobee, for molding Christ in a way that seemed to diminish his uniqueness), he is probably more concerned with claiming Christ for Africa (which is also why he is critical of Pobee’s articulation: by acknowledging the unique role and relationship of Christ in the Jewish community Christ can be transported meaningfully into his relationship to the African [or, more precisely, Akan, Igbu, etc.] community, rather than simply being identified with African terms that do not helpfully connect the African to Christ); this is revealed in his criticism for fellow evangelical Kato, who receives the harshest treatment of his dissertation, despite the similarity of their claims about Christ’s uniqueness, as compared to Mbiti or, particularly, Iduwo: Kato rejects the African context and leaves Christianity vulnerable to attacks as a foreign religion.
How Jesus interacts with the African primal religious context – the cult of ancestors, the chief problem (because it seems to have no analogue in Christianity). But Bediako sees in the ancestors the projection of the community’s values (in that not all become “ancestors” but only those who live exemplary lives) into the transcendent reality; thus it functions (in academic and formal terms) as “myth.” It is the myth-making community that sacralizes ancestors, not the transcendent realm; thus the potency of the cult is not that of the ancestors, but of the community which honors them. Jesus Christ fulfills our aspirations in relation to ancestral function: ancestors are considered worthy for having lived among us; Christ has done infinitely more. They had no choice but to live among us; Christ chose it specifically. They had no barriers to cross to be “among us” but he had to cross the God/creature, divide, and the above the curse/under the curse divide, etc. Thus, Christ can be related to as an ancestor (one who exemplifies the values of the community [in this case a community who’s values are shaped by God in Scripture]), but also as one greater than the ancestors in that, in order to do the same thing they do, he had to do so intentionally, and with greater cost.
The nature of apologetics in the NT is from the historical event, to the theological significance. This is the pattern which must be used in working in a pluralistic context, and in acknowledging that the religious context of the recipient of apologetics is a suitable place for their reception. Trying to cut that context out will not aid the process.
Bediako talks of how in the 1990s African theology was witnessing the closing of the careers of the major “first” (or “older”?) generation of theologians and realigning its focus, from responding to the missionary/post-missionary context, to engaging African Christianity as a major world religion.
In discussing the primal imagination Bediako looks to the success of Prophet Harris, and sees in his ministry an ability to engage the primal imagination which is both simple (the nature of Harris’ teaching) and complex (Harris’ understanding of the universe he lived in). He proposes Turner’s 6-feature analysis of primal imagination: (1) kinship with nature: plants and animals have a spiritual dimension as well as humans; (2) sense of man’s finiteness, weakness, and impurity/sinfulness; (3) man is not alone in the universe – a spiritual world of powers and beings more powerful and ultimate than himself exists; (4) man can enter into relationship with the benevolent spirit-world; (5) acute sense of the reality of the afterlife (seen in the relationship with ancestors); (6) man lives in a sacramental universe: strong unity between physical and spiritual world. Bediako notes that primal religions conceive of religion as a system of power and of living religiously, as being in touch with the Source and channels of power in the universe; Christian theology in the West tends to understand the Christian Gospel as a system of ideas. Paul describes the gospel as ‘the power of God to save all who believe...’ Rom. 1:16 – this looks much more like the former conception.

Bediako gives an excellent and detailed account of the history of Christianity in Africa. This text is an excellent resource for research for anyone studying the theological context of the region.

Very well written

This, my first book and look into African Theology and Kwame Bediako. A great read and will definitely need to read again along with other similar material. Raises some great questions not only applicable to the African church but universally. Also has encouraged me to investigate further in the indigenous experience of New Zealand. Very well written, sparking interest in pursuing further the very surprising implications of Majority World Theology.
