The Heavens Declare...

I must admit I started this book with a bit of hesitation. Though I think the subject matter is worthy of investigation, it seems that often these type of topics get undermined by hype. Reassuringly, Pastor Mark Biltz's book, Blood Moons: Decoding the Imminent Heavenly Signs does not fall into that category. The book was an intelligent and reasoned look at the subject by an enthusiastic Berean who sees the evidence he discovered as one (of the many) signs which point to the soon return of Yeshua.

In Revelation 19:10 it says that, "...the testimony of Yeshua/Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." One of my personal tests when reading books on Bible prophecy is to see if the "spirit" of the book testifies to Yeshua as the Messiah promised in the Scripture. To me, if the main focus of the book is not pointing me towards the Messiah then no matter how interesting or exciting the information, I consider it suspect. After reading Blood Moons I think you will find, like me, that Pastor Biltz is opening the pages of the Scripture with wonderful insights and at every opportunity pointing you towards Yeshua the Messiah.

Some of the highlights of the book were:

*The Hebrew word pictures.
*The Divine appointments: Pastor Biltz's explanation of the Biblical feast days in light of Yeshua's 1st and 2nd coming is one of the best parts of the book.
*A Biblical reckoning of time. (i.e. the Biblical calendar is based upon lunar/solar cycles)
*The eclipse events as they relate to the Biblical calendar. (groundbreaking research)
*The importance of watching for Yeshua's return

When reading this book you will see the hand of YHWH at work in reconciling mankind through Yeshua. I loved the author's explanation of the priestly courses showing how Yeshua would have been born in the 7th month during the Feast of Tabernacles. How it confirms the word of John where it states that Yeshua became flesh and "dwelt" or tabernacled with mankind. Adding further credibility to the Pastor Biltz's argument is the fact that the 13/14th priestly courses served during the 7th month. Their names were Huppah (Canopy) & Jeshebeab (Dwelling of the father). Now how awesome is that!

"...and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." Matt. 1:23

When Pastor Biltz talked about the Biblical calendar being a billboard in the heavens I couldn't help but think of the lunar cycle the visible light of which has waxed and waned for 13/14 days every month for thousands of years.
*How in one of those amazing "coincidences" in the Scripture the lineage of Matthew 1 shows Yeshua as the 13th generation,by implication His resurrection making him the 14th as well.
*How Luke 1 shows Yeshua's birth taking place during the 13/14th priestly course.
*How Isaac, as a symbol of Yeshua, was to be offered as a "burnt" offering, the "burnt" offerings during the Feast of Tabernacles being arranged in multiples of 13/14.
*How Paul in Eph. 2:13-14 talks about Yeshua's blood breaking down the "middle wall of partition" between Jews and Gentiles. How that wall during the life of Yeshua was accessed by 14 steps and entry to the temple was granted by one of 13 gates.

In summary I think the Blood Moons: Decoding the Imminent Heavenly Signs and the research it represents will be looked back upon as one of those catalysts which will have a defining impact on Bible prophecy as we move into the last days before the Messiah returns. I would recommend you get the book, read it, and then open your Bible as a Berean and "see if these things be so."

God does things in the form of patterns

Mark Biltz reveals the patterns that God has always followed. Whether it be via a King and Kingdom, Father and Son, or Husband and wife (marriage, family etc) In returning to the root of our faith as Christians, Mark Biltz is showing to the world how all of these things are being revealed. It is as though God is lifting the veil for this generation. Understanding the Blood Moons and reasons that God created the eclipses, both solar and lunar, in conjunction with God's Festivals or Holidays, reconnecting these events to HIS calendar, His people and why...shows to all of us how our redeemer, our Creator is preparing to redeem the nations back to the plan that caused all of this to happen in the first place. (Whew!) God is showing to us how he is restoring relationships between heaven and earth. Pastor Mark Biltzs' book opens up to the Christian and perhaps strengthens the bridge between Jew and non Jew, restoration. Blood Moons is about relationship, God to men! This book is a book meant for this entire global generation!

Signs in the heavens or not

As a statistician/market researcher, I felt like I needed to "fact check" this book. What Mark Biltz talks about has the attention of many as it can not be a coincidence. He links the blood moons to the biblical (Jewish) calendar and shows how things can't be happening by coincidence. God has and does use blood moons as "signs from the heavens". As a christian, this book will teach you new things and add to your walk with the Lord. As a non-christian, you can scoff all you want but you'll see that it is statistically impossible that this all would be happening by chance. Very well written. Mark starts with his personal journey and then shows how he discovered the blood moons "signs". Very engaging and informative read.

A Great Value

As the owner of a whole 'lotta cookbooks, I sometimes have to explain my theory of cookbooks to my husband. In the case of "Barefoot Contessa at Home", the recipe for Easy Cheese Danish is a perfect example. This recipe uses 6 ingredients plus seasonings. It can be made the night before you need it. Both of which translate into making my life easier. And it can be enjoyed by our family and our holiday guests for years to come. If you break down the cost of the book as to how many times we'll use just that one recipe, you'll see what a great value it really is.

And, of course, there are many more recipes included that make it even better. Most of the recipes are a creative version of standard fare, like a coleslaw that uses blue cheese or the jalapeno cheddar cornbread or the Chicken Salad Veronique. The book includes chapters entitled soup and sandwiches; salads; dinner; vegetables; dessert; breakfast; and others.

And I like it that Ms. Garten includes a recipe for "Chicken with Goat Cheese and Basil" that can be prepared in 10 minutes when, as she puts it "I'm too tired to cook." I LOVE recipes like that.

And, what about the "frozen berries with hot white chocolate"? Looking forward to trying that.

Plus, Barefoot Contessa at Home includes menu suggestions, which are helpful if you're in a hurry or need inspiration. Each recipe is partnered by a beautiful photograph so you can see what you're making and how it should look.

I like her style, I like her recipes and I like her cookbook.

Ina changed my life!

I cook because of Ina. Before I found her first cookbook, I cooked infrequently. I knew the basics, but I didn't have simple, great tasting recipes that I enjoyed making on a regular basis. Ina changed my life with her books, and my friends and family thank her for it!

I'm one of those people that needs to have a photo of the finished product, and Ina delivers beautiful images, encouraging you to give the recipe a try. Her recipes were easy and each one was a tasty success, I have slowly devoured my way through her books.

I am thrilled with this new one, and just with the first pass through it, I've found 14 recipes I'd like to try immediately!

I am a little surprised by comments made by one of the other reviewers, (which is why I am now writing my first review for Amazon.) They had issue with Ina's liberal use of butter and salt, the cost of the book, her crediting recipes to other people, Ina's suggestions for grocery shopping, etc. How funny!

Part of Ina's charm and fabulous tasting food results from copious amounts of butter and salt. If you have an issue with it, you probably shouldn't make those recipes. (She has plenty of recipes that don't have butter in them, but they aren't as tasty!)

Why someone would complain about the cost of the cookbook baffles me. The retail cost of the books is $35, (I pre-ordered it for $20.35) It is a wonderful book with exquisite photos, and if you say it has only 80 recipes, I'll take your word for it. Would you rather sit in front of the TV, watching her show and writing down the recipes? I feel this is the type of book that because it is so beautiful, would be a lovely gift, let alone a welcome addition to anyone's kitchen.

Each chef and their cookbooks are unique, and Ina's style fits perfectly into my kitchen. I just hope that Ina keeps producing more books so I can keep expanding my list of recipes!

More cooking pleasure from Ina

So...........where do I start? The sharp, beautiful, glossy photography that entices you to make each delicious recipe? The welcoming and carefree pictures of Ina and Jeffrey's beautiful home that are the background for this book? The helpful hints and encouragement from Ina? The use of fresh veggies and fruit to make each meal so good to eat? It's hard to figure out which to place first, but regardless of where you want to begin, you'll find yourself at ease.

Ina just seems to get better and better with each volume of gastronomic delights, even when you think she has already given us the best. Her fifth venture into the publishing world is no less wonderful than her first four.

She has broken down her book into six main categories of cooking (soup and sandwich, salads, dinner, veggies, dessert, breakfast) then ties it all up with an interesting addendum of "if you're visiting the Hamptons" which is a tribute, of sorts, to all the lovely places she goes to in the Hamptons, to see and smell and taste and enjoy; much appreciated, good friend! The book flows as such:

INTRODUCTION

This is a really friendly introduction that helps you get caught up with her casual approach to planning, her path to this career change, and all the little hints and idea's that you can incorporate to make any get-together with family and friends all that more fun and memorable. She also gives you 2 quick recipes for getting guests to unwind and snack until all is ready for the main event, and they are Fresh Whiskey Sours, and Green Herb Dip. She then gives you a little help in how to plan your grocery list and the actual shopping.

THIS. IS. GREAT!

WOW!!! THIS. IS. GREAT. I got this in a day early, and before I knew it I was already 20 pages in before needing an eye break. Distraction free for smooth reading because of no chapter & verse numbers. I hope Crossway does the rest of the Bible in this format and in separate volumes. I am enjoying the print size, font and spacing - along with the cream color and THICK pages. FEELS like a Novel in the hands. This is now my favorite Bible format. This is close to how the original audience would have read scripture if they could have afforded a personal copy.

Absolutely Stunning- Thank you Crossway!

This book is the 4 Gospels- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John printed on thick opaque paper and without any cross references, verse/chapter numbers or section headings. It reads like a NOVEL. I find myself getting lost in the storyline of the gospels and reading for large periods of time. The type size is large but not too large, maybe 10 point I would guess. This is similar to the ESV Reader's Bible but of course, it is only the gospels AND it's printed on thicker, opaque paper which makes a HUGE difference. There is absolutely no ghosting and it's easy on my eyes to read for large periods of time. This is how the bible was meant to be read!

In the back there is a listing of each page and what chapter it is... for example page 261 is John chapter 7. So if you wanted to know what chapter you were reading you could easily do that by looking in the back.

This is absolutely beautiful and my new favorite (partial) bible! I am going to write to Crossway, the publisher, and ask if they will release the whole bible in this stunning format- The Gospels, The Epistles, The Prophets, Covenant History, and Poetry in 5 separate volumes. It would be a huge hit!!!!!

I just received this Bible (4 Gospels) and I wish I could give it 10 stars. This is the most beautiful print addition of the Bible I own. Admittedly I'm not a fan of the ESV. However, I must say they do know how to print a beautiful enticing Bible. From the slip cover to the cloth hardback, from the typeset to the page layout and the subtle use of color...inside and out this Bible is amazing. Other publishers take note, this should be the standard of print design that every translation should be measured against.

oh and the cost... truly amazing!

Delightful Book

This book is a delightful collection of 55 familiar english nursery rhymes re-worked for South African children. It weaves in many familiar South African words and images (depicting South Africa's diverse cultures,people,languages, animals, homes, way of life etc) with which the children of Southern Africa can identify.
( eg "Pussy cat pussy cat where did you go? I went to Madiba to say:'hello!'" :)
Beautifully illustrated and brilliantly adapted , this book is sure to be treasured by all children who love Africa, both those who have grown up there, and those curious or enchanted by the wonder of Africa.

I grew up as an expat in Southern Africa and purchased this book for my child who is adopted from South Africa.Both of us have loved it~ I for the memories it evokes and the familiarity of the images and words, and they for the humor and what it teaches them about their homeland. A special shared experience as we snuggle and laugh together and enjoy Africa in rhyme.

Two minor points to note..
1-a glossary is not included, which is a shame as I imagine it would be quite helpful for those not familiar with the South African words or pronunciation, however most words are in english and I would certainly not let that put you off purchasing this special book.
2- There is a couple of images of witch doctors included which may put some people off ..a big deal is not made of them but I did feel it worth a mention.

Overall I highly recommend this book!!

About the Author

JOHN SHAPLEY GRAY is Professor of Computer Science and Chair of the Interactive Information Technology degree program at the University of Hartford, West Hartford, CT, and principal of Gray Software Development. Gray has been actively involved with UNIX and its derivatives for over 20 years; his course on UNIX internals has become legendary amongst students and developers throughout the greater Hartford area. He is author of the best-selling Interprocess Communications in UNIX, Second Edition, and co-author of C++ Programmer's Notebook.

The topic of interprocess communication techniques is broad, challenging and dynamic. All but the most basic operating systems provide methods for processes communication. Early on, UNIX supported a number of rudimentary process communication constructs (such as lock files, signals and pipes). In the early 1980s, facilities such as message queues, semaphores, and shared memory were added to the mix by AT&T with its release of UNIX System V. Somewhat concurrently, the Berkeley Software Distribution added support for Internet protocols (4.3BSD) and the socket interface as a communication construct. By the mid-1990s, threads and multithreaded programming techniques were making significant, permanent inroads into the UNIX mainstream.

Along the way, UNIX spawned innumerable UNIX-like operating systems. One such operating system was MINIX. MINIX, written by Andrew S. Tanenbaum, is a small (about twelve thousand lines) PC version of UNIX. MINIX was presented as a pedagogical tool to permit the user to gain a better understanding of the inner working of a UNIX-like operating system. As all of the operating system source code was provided, the user could tinker with the code and refine its functionality. As a university student, Linus Torvalds' exposure to MINIX led him to develop a more robust UNIX-like operating system called Linux. In brief, Linux is a freely distributed hybrid version of UNIX. Linux system administration is BSD-like while its programming environment has a definite AT&T flavor. A number of commercial versions of Linux populate the market. These versions bundle Linux with a variety of other operating system related utilities and software packages. One of the more widely distributed commercial versions is Red Hat Linux. Red Hat Linux includes Richard Stallman's GNU project C (gcc) and C++ (g++) compilers.

This text explores the intricacies of interprocess communications as supported by Red Hat Linux version 7.3 and 8.0. It is assumed that the reader has a working knowledge of C/C++ programming. It is further assumed that while not being an expert, the reader has worked in a UNIX type environment and is reasonably familiar with generating and editing text using an editor such as vi or pico (available from the University of Washington). This text makes extensive references to specific system calls and predefined library functions. The reader is encouraged to read the manual pages for each system call/library function as it is encountered. As in UNIX, the manual pages in Linux are an unparalleled source of information. Appendix A covers the format and use of manual pages.

All programming references and examples were generated on a PC Pentium-based platform running Red Hat Linux 7.3, using the GNU C/C++ compiler version 2.96. With the release of Red Hat Linux 8.0 and GNU 3.2 the examples were revisited and tweaked where necessary. Many of the examples and most of the exercises have also been compiled and run in a Solaris 2.8 setting using GNU 2.95. Most often, few if any modifications were needed to generate clean, executable code in this alternate environment.

Each example is a complete standalone program. Command line examples, except where noted, are Korn shell based. In any setting, IPC (interprocess communication) support must be available for the user to pursue the materials covered in the chapters on semaphores, message queues, and shared memory. When Linux is installed, usually IPC support is enabled (check the /proc directory for the presence of the sysvipc directory). If it is not present you may need to modify system configuration files and recompile the kernel. There are a number of places that one can peruse for information on how this might be done. One source of information is the Configure.help file that resides in the /usr/src/linuxXXXX/Documentation subdirectory (where XXXX is the version of Linux). However, unless you are the system administrator, you most likely will want to seek help when doing this. To work with threads, a POSIX compliant thread library (such as LinuxThreads) must be available. Fortunately, most new versions of Linux come with thread libraries that are distributed with the GNU compiler (check the /usr/lib directory for files names containing pthread, e.g., libpthread.a or libpthread.so).

Great for Beginners!

This book is an excellent introductory book for beginners simply because the author is extremely eloquent in explaining the nooks and crannies. The minor details expressed in-between the core topics covered actually serves to enhance your knowlege of how the OS works. I am taking a class in Advanced Unix Programming and find that by reading ahead of the lectures, I am always fully prepared to answer almost all the questions fielded by the professor, as well as the students. It is pleasantly surprising that most of the questions asked by the students relate to the little minor details that the author slipped in between the paragraphs. My compliments to the author for the brilliant foresight.
I also have the Stevens series. Although the series is well known as the bible of network programming, I feel that this book helps brave a newbie for the more complex and drier narrrative in the Stevens series. Do buy this book if you are a beginner and have no idea where to start. Don't buy this book if you are already familiar with Unix programming and are looking to cover more in-depth material.

It uses EXTENSIVE demo code to explain the concept which really helps you to master the design. This is a great book for both beginners and inter-mediate *nix programmers.
